After my lessons on Tuesday I rode the underground a lot, so much so that it went overground at one point, and explored the outskirts of Nagoya around the area where it starts turning into Seto. This may sound very adventurous and exciting, but at the time I was trying to find the University's inexplicably far away other campus, and for a counselling session at that, I didn't have a lot of fun with the experience. Looking back with a more stable state of mind I can report that the scenery was rather nice, like the kind of town you pass through which makes you think "I wouldn't mind living in a place like this someday," before you realise it's rather far away from anywhere you may wish to go. I also ran into a gang of cats lurking outside a block of flats; they seemed very interested in my presence but didn't have the courage to come and talk to me. Most Japanese cats I've encountered seem to be incredibly given to flight, but perhaps they've been strays and have reason to timid.
As for Wednesday, I spent in a kind of mourning for the Irinaka branch of Book-Off. It may seem strange, but I think it is an awful thing for a book that can still be read to be just thrown away, so for someone like me it wasn't easy to see great boxfuls tumbling into rubbish vans (at least Japan is quite good with the environment, so they'll probably be recycled, small comfort though it is). I found myself walking to the next nearest shop to make sure it was just that branch and not the whole chain that closed. There is one within an hour or so's walking distance, so at least my days of buying cheap manga are not completely over.
Most of Thursday and Friday are a bit of a blur to me - I think there may have been lots of project work, which I don't want to remember. Also, lots of classes have sort of... finished. By this I mean we've got to the end of the textbook we were using as well as the grammar, reading, vocabulary and kanji exercise packets. Once again I ask myself, was this part of the teachers' plans? Do they even have plans? According to the timetable for the next two weeks we're going to be reading through a short novel and just picking up things based on that. Not a bad way of learning, in my opinion, but it still feels bizarrely laid back to me. The many wonders of living in a different country!
